Sampling is where a product becomes real, but founders often receive a jar with no clear explanation of what changed or what they are supposed to learn from it. A useful sample round begins with one written question.

Give every sample a purpose

“Less sticky” can involve humectants, polymers, film formers, oils, use amount and climate. Changing all of them at once makes the next sample different but does not explain why. Ask the chemist to isolate a variable or controlled group whenever the formula allows it.

Evaluate as a timeline

Record pick-up, spread, playtime, break, absorption, tack, finish and after-feel separately. Use the intended amount and routine. Test under sunscreen, makeup or adjacent hair products when compatibility is part of the real product job.

  • Use coded samples.
  • Evaluate under similar conditions.
  • Record what changed before testing.
  • Compare against a named attribute, not memory.
  • End with one decision for the next round.

Know what stability testing is for

Formal stability evaluates whether the product remains acceptable under defined conditions over time. The programme may examine appearance, odour, pH, viscosity, separation, package interaction and microbiological performance, depending on product and market. Your laboratory and safety partners should define the appropriate protocol.

Do not confuse a promising sample with a launch-ready formula

A sample can look beautiful today and fail later. Packaging compatibility, preservation, scale-up and production conditions still matter. Build those gates into the timeline before printing a launch date.
